Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I choose individual counseling?
People consider individual counseling for a variety of reasons and our therapists strive to be a safe, compassionate, and confidential source for helping individuals overcome life’s obstacles that may be difficult to face alone. Hopefully, you will learn ways of handling difficult situations, making healthy decisions, and reaching goals as well as freedom from anxiety, stress, depression, addiction, relationship struggles and issues resulting from trauma. Other reasons you might desire individual counseling may include; assistance with the identification of authentic self, the discovery of ways to create and maintain healthy relationships in an unbiased, objective manner, and guidance in the way you view conflict and create healthy boundaries with others, just to name a few. It may allow you space and ways to heal from and make sense of the past and how it facilitated present issues while empowering you to handle future challenges in a positive and healthy way.
Many people have been using other methods of coping for many years and some of these methods may not be healthy to the individual. Individual counseling provides a safe and healthy coping mechanism for individuals that could be struggling with a variety of life issues. In today’s world, many people are isolated and do not open up about their life struggles so they carry the burden of their past and fear of the future around with them on a daily basis, not knowing that if they would simply open up to another person about those burdens and fears, that would provide much relief to them. Individual counseling provides a person that opportunity.
What will take place during my counseling sessions?
Your initial session will center around gathering information through a collaborative effort between you and your therapist. Together, you will explore your physical, mental, and emotional health along with other contributing factors as well as discuss the presenting issue that facilitated recognition of the need for therapy. It may take a few sessions for your therapist to have a good understanding of the situation as well as address concerns and determine your individual treatment plan. It is common to schedule a series of weekly sessions, with each session lasting approximately fifty minutes. A treatment can be short-term, focusing on a specific concern, or longer-term, addressing more complex issues or ongoing personal growth. There may be times when you will be asked to take certain actions outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book or journal article, keeping records to track certain thoughts and behaviors or identifying certain stressors. It can be very helpful and healing to process with your therapist what has been discussed in session and practiced in your daily routine.
Are there different techniques involved in individual therapy?
There is a multitude of individual therapy techniques available, which allows your therapist the opportunity to create a personalized treatment plan suited specifically for you. In general, you can expect to discuss the current events happening in your life, personal history relevant to your issue, and report progress (or any new insights gained) from previous sessions. It will be common for your therapist to combine ideas from different approaches when addressing your specific needs. Several forms utilized are, but not limited to: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which encourages individuals to recognize the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and ultimately, replace distorted thinking patterns with new restructured ones and Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which seeks to increase an individual’s emotional and cognitive regulation; Solution focused therapy techniques, places focus on a person’s present and future circumstances and goals rather than past experiences; Person-Centered therapy, which diverges from the traditional model of the therapist as expert and moves instead toward a nondirective, empathic approach that empowers and motivates the client in the therapeutic process; and 12-Step facilitation which the goal of this therapy is to facilitate patients’ active participation in the fellowship of a 12-Step program. It regards such active involvement as the primary factor responsible for sustained sobriety (“recovery”) and therefore as the desired outcome.
Should I see a counselor along with medication prescribed by my doctor?
Both medicine therapy and counseling have proven effective in the treatment of emotional and behavioral problems. However, there is evidence that combining counseling and medications may be more effective than either treatment alone. Medication alone will sometimes alleviate the symptoms of a certain disorder, whereas, counseling addresses the cause of our distress and the behavior patterns that restrict our progress. We believe that sustainable growth and a greater sense of well-being can oftentimes be achieved with an integrative approach to wellness. Your personalized plan will be based on the best available options for your wellness, hopefully, coupled with your commitment to the recommended treatment plan.
Is therapy confidential?
Therapy is completely confidential. One of the main goals of therapy is to provide a safe and trusting environment for the individual while fostering a collaborative partnership between therapist and client. It is our goal for you to feel safe being open and honest in your therapy sessions, therefore, confidentiality is strictly upheld by you and your therapist. In addition, it is required by law for a therapist to keep all information private. The only time information may be released is if a form is signed by the client specifically designating to whom the information can be released to. State law and professional ethics require therapists to maintain confidentiality except for two types of situations-
- Suspected past or present abuse or neglect of children, adults, and elders must be reported to the authorities, including Child Protection and law enforcement, based on information provided by the client or collateral sources.
- Therapist suspects a client is seriously in danger of harming him/herself or has threatened to harm another person.
